“I began painting the ocean simply because I grew up on the coast and its familiarity has always been a source of inspiration for me. I think to paint the ocean you must love it, and to love it you must know it. The ocean fascinates me particularly because of its mysterious ability to change so drastically, yet continually follow the strict rules of the tide. It is a force of nature, very powerful at one moment, yet quietly calming at another. The constant shifting patterns of light and dark and the vibrancy and softness of the palette provides an endless source of information as a subject matter. I want my paintings to depict a feeling of immersion in the subject matter, similar to what I feel while painting it, almost as if being immersed in the ocean itself.”
